So, why am I going on toy safari in Edinburgh?

First, a little background

My name is Matt, also know as Hellbelly on pretty much every platform, I’ve been taking photographs for about 15 years, and taking toy photos for around 11, although over the last couple of years I’ve been suffering a bit of a creative slump, and have had limited time and inclination to take photos.
This is one of the reasons I’m going to Edinburgh. Continue reading “So, why am I going on toy safari in Edinburgh?”

The Arctic Road Trip

As soon as I decided to move to Northern Finland last year, my plan for the summer holidays was to go on an Adventure in Northern Norway. After two recent short road trips to the Lofoten Islands and to Tromsø and the Island of Senja at the end of the winter, I had a better idea of what my summer plan would look like. I wanted to visit new locations, but also go back to the ones I saw in the winter so I could see how different they are in the summer. Continue reading “The Arctic Road Trip”

Travel Part 2 – Back to Norway

I fell in love… with Norway.

There is no other word or expression I can use to describe how my Easter trip affected me. Not two weeks had passed that I decided to go back to Norway for the weekend of the First of May. I was looking for something to do in Finland, maybe in Lapland. But in the end, it seemed that I would rather drive a bit more to Norway. Continue reading “Travel Part 2 – Back to Norway”

To The Lofoten Islands and Back Again

Could the last month’s word be the best of the year? Maybe Boris still has a few good surprises left… Anyway I’ve been excited as soon as I learned it would be “travel”. Travel is what have motivated me most for the past few years. I started taking photos while traveling, and before focusing on toys, I was mostly interested in travel photography. Today I would most likely describe myself as a travel toy photographer: the feeling of travel and adventure has become what I strive to share visually with my photos. Spread your wings and fly away

Choosing one figure from this new Collectible Minifigures Series is really hard. Once again I’m very tempted of getting all of them. When asked which one I’d like to review, I thought about which one would better fit the Finnish landscapes surrounding me: forests and lakes. There were three possible choices: the Elf, the Dwarf and the Butterfly Girl. From those three my favorite is without a doubt the Butterfly Girl.

But good timing allowed me to actually take my first photos of the Butterfly Girl in a slightly different environment. Probably the most beautiful I’ve personally been given to see: Northern Norway. I headed there for a four-day weekend road trip, without any specific plan other than hoping the location would inspire me some kind of story. Continue reading “Spread your wings and fly away”

A trip to Japan: work travel and toy photography

12 hours…!

I have just spent 12 hours in a metal can to fly across the globe.

It’s Thursday afternoon and I have landed at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport after a long trip back from Kobe, Japan. I was there during 2 days, for work.

My job demands me to travel a lot (in France and internationally). And, at the same time, I like my job and I like to travel, so when I am not at the office, I am happy.

I have been to the US, to several countries in Europe and to more “exotic” places such as Brazil, Australia, Taiwan, Laos, Tanzania, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and now, Japan.

Travel

This month our word is travel.

Traveling to faraway destinations, exploring the unknown. Discovering new environments, new light, new sounds, and trying to catch the moment.
The world as our studio.

Some of us shoot mainly in the studio and like to recreate the magic on a blank canvas from the ground up, controlling all the variables, building the scene one strobe at the time. Others like to shoot on location and have the world as their backdrop.

Shooting on location always has that little extra, that unique moment, that imperfection and uniqueness that the studio does not have.
A variable that cannot be controlled.
A variable that influences by design the actual shoot.
A fleeting moment, you can capture only then and there.

You can do some location scouting, you can do some research and pack your gear (and toys) for the unknown, and yet, the unexpected will happen.

And that is what this month’s word is all about. Continue reading “Travel”

Because I can…

As the days are passing by and two o seventeen is growing older our journey of twelve words is with me wherever I am. Be it at work, on weekends when out and about or sometimes while taking a shower. The last days had me thinking about the word of February: inspiration.

What inspires me?
Or who does so?
What is inspiration to me at all?
A feeling?
A state of mind?
A signal that starts something in me whenever I notice it?

Two weeks ago Boris gave an insight into the origins of the word and about the different facets of it. Let me explain my idea of it and what it is connected with for me. Continue reading “Because I can…”
