Meet Hanna

It’s friday, it’s time for a new #FeatureFriday interview. Following my interview of two great Toy Photographers women for HispaBrick Magazine 032, let’s meet Hanna (@hannakuvaa on Instagram).

Can you present yourself shortly?

I’m Hanna, a nature and toy photographer living in Finland, on the northern edge of Europe. By education I am a biologist, working as a biology and geography teacher. I got my first film camera for a birthday present when I turned ten, but I only took real interest on photography when I got my hands on a DSLR camera 15 years later.

Week 11 – Bjarke Ingels

An architect

Welcome to another week and another person of interest. This week we´d like to draw your attention to a  man who keeps amazing the world with his ideas and creations. His name is Bjarke Ingels.

Bjarke who?

When reading about Danish architects you will easily recognize some great names who created some iconic buildings. Think of the Sydney Opera House by Jørn Utzon, the extension of the Malmö Library by Henning Larsen or the beautiful design works by Arne Jacobsen. Our man is no exception to this.

The Wall Street Journal named him Inovator Of The Year in 2011 for achitecture. And in 2016 Time Magazine decided that he was amongst the 100 Most Influential People.

Happy Birthday, Barbie

Today is the sixtieth birthday of Barbie. We could not resist getting Barbie in front of the camera and get some portrait shooting going to celebrate this plastic icon.

Happy Birthday, Barbie. You still rock.

Meet Kenton

This week, we’re coming back with our series of #FeatureFriday interviews. Of course, this time not about SiPgoes52, but SiPgoes53. Today it’s Kenton who joins us around a virtual cup of coffee.

About Kenton

I live in Salt Lake City, UT and am the father of four kids that help me build my LEGO creations and, from time to time, even help me set up photos. My day job is working as an e-commerce director at a company that makes bags and travel accessories.

I first started taking toy photos about 4 years ago when my wife bought me some LEGO for Christmas which reignited the passion I always had as a kid of building amazing LEGO sets. I was initially inspired by Avanaut and his work that I had seen on Flickr even before I started getting back into LEGO. Then I discovered Chris McVeigh and started trying to recreate the style of both with certain photos.

Tolkien

I love all types of photography and actually used to have a successful wedding photography business on the side. As my family has grown, I don’t have as much time to do that anymore and toy photography has taken its place. It allows me to miniaturize my subjects and setups, and create awesome shoots with a variety of “models” and sets all in my basement on a small table.

Maria the First

From Poland to France

Maria Skłodowska-Curie is one of the most remarkable Polish scientists.

She was born in 1867 in Warsaw. She had been revealing talents for science since her childhood, but at that time Poland, after the Third Partition, became part of the Russian Empire, and in the area of annexation scientific activity was limited. In addition, women simply were not allowed to study.

Looking back at SiPgoes52

Now that we’re reaching the end of Week 4 of SiPgoes53, we thought it was about time to create a gallery of photos from those who took part in SiPgoes52.

The main point of SiPgoes52 (and SiPgoes53) was not necessarily to make 52 photos but to find inspiration around a theme. We’ve asked people who shared a picture for at least 12 of the words to send us their personal favorite photo (or word) of SiPgoes52. The one that inspired them most. And to tell us why.

Interestingly, (almost) everyone chose a different word…

Week 4 – Marilyn Monroe

From last week´s natural scientist and great observer Charles Darwin to this week´s person for our challenge, it may seem a long way- yet it´s just a week. Let´s put our hands together for an actress, a singer, a model and a film producer.

Welcome Norma Jeane

Human being of the week for #SiPgoes53 was born as Norma Jeane Mortensen in 1962. Many will know her baptismal name, Baker, better. And probably everyone will know her as Marilyn Monroe.

A Hogwarts story

It was a dark Sunday night at Hogwarts. One of those nights during which silence roams the corridors of this giant castle. A night of full moon…

Hogwarts at night

In one of the small rooms of Hogwarts, three little wizards were quietly working on something. It was Harry, Ron and Hermione, all gathered around a big cauldron, shimmering sparkles in their eyes. They were working on a potion.

Three wizards around a cauldron

“Shall I drink it?” said Harry, a spoon full of gooey liquid in his hand. And before someone had the time to say no, he put the spoon in his mouth. He could feel the hot liquid going down his throat. He closed his eyes and opened them again. And said “Well, nothing happened. It looks like you failed Hermione…”

The Mini

I was really excited when I received the email from SiP asking for some helping out on a creative project. And what a project. The opportunity to shoot this iconic car. I even woke up that night thinking about potential locations that would fit for this amazing set.

The comfort zone ...

There were a few go-to outdoor spots that I had used before, but I decided that I needed to test myself and step out of my comfort zone to come up with something new. Something original. Since it was mid-September and heading into autumn, I immediately thought of the color palette that nature would supply at this time of year. Colors complementing the racing green of the classic Mini. Images of the car, speeding along a country lane with leaves falling all around under autumn’s golden sun, started to emerge. I was all ready.

For Your Eyes Only

Some time ago Stuck In Plastic contacted me asking: “We are looking for a creative photographer to join us in a creative challenge…”  It turned out that LEGO was looking to get some of its iconic cars shot by creative toy photographers. Did  I accept the mission? Of course I did.
