Make an exact copy of a photograph – a photo challenge

We started a new series of photo-challenges here on SiP when Shelly asked me (and herself) to write about our work. This time it’s my turn to look in The Photographers Playbook and choose a challenge. I thought I would take one that involves photographing this time ;) The assignment I have chosen is one by Takashi Homma, and at first glance it may seem easy, but I think we’ll struggle with this one, because of my experience of trying to make photographs like the photographs I admire.

The challenge is:

“pick a  photograph by one of your favorite photographers and try and shoot an exact copy of it. Take the setup seriously and consider aspects like composition and point of view.”

As I’ve already confessed, I’ve tried this before and never really succeeded, but this time I’ll try harder ;) I look forward to seeing your result as well as mine when we sum up this challenge in two weeks …

I’m really excited about this one and want to do it this time! A few weeks ago I thought about trying to do a “tribute project” by replicating photos from different toy photographers who inspired me and gave me the itch to photograph toys myself. As I already have difficulties replicating my own photos it’s definitely going to be interesting.

Kristina,

To clarify, are we emulating a toy photographer or a regular photographer, or does it matter?

This is going to be very hard for me!

I had this exact assignment in a digital photography class I took a couple years ago, and love it! It was a really basic class in which i didn’t learn much more than I already knew (in terms of practical skills), but it was an opportunity to learn about a few artists, take photos and earn credit for them. :) The photographer I chose to emulate was Jim Marshall, famous for his jazz and rock’n’roll portraits from the 60s & 70s. I selected four images I thought would be fun (and attainable) to recreate in LEGO. I really enjoyed the… Read more »
